Lando Norris edged out fellow driver and championship contender Oscar Piastri for the fastest time in the closing stages of the practice session at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Norris, who grabbed the points lead from his teammate by a single point after his victory in Mexico City two weeks ago, topped the Australian by 0.023 seconds. Before then, Piastri had been the fastest McLaren driver for most of the session before sprint qualifying set to begin at 18:30 GMT. The Red Bull star, the other racer in the championship fight, sitting with a 36-point deficit behind Norris, was classified in 17th place as his Red Bull team followed a unique setup. His teammate the Japanese driver was the only driver to go off, if briefly, when he lost control at corner four soon after starting. Tsunoda lost control over the exit kerbs before spinning across the escape zone, and was fortunate to get away with just a slight brush of the barrier. The Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton also spun, at the very end of the session, turning around through the fast downhill Mergulho corner before the final bend on to the pit straight. The seven-time champion ended the session in 19th, trailing team-mate the Monegasque driver. Norris and Piastri were well clear of the rest of the field, with the German's car P3, 0.619 seconds slower than Piastri's best. The Aston Martin of the Spanish driver was fourth fastest, with the Sauber of Gabriel Bortoleto ahead of the Mercedes of George Russell and the Alpine of Pierre Gasly and Williams' Sainz.
